Skip hire – The Good, The Bad And The Ugly!

Thursday 23rd May 2019

We're jumping in feet first with this week's blog topic. All businesses that work in a waste management related industry have a story to tell. Usually the bad and the ugly because what's interesting about a good skip hire story?!? So, this week we share with you some of the stories we've heard along the way in our rendition of The Good, The Bad & The Ugly! Let's begin with....The Ugly We've all heard the saying "If it seems too good to be true, then it probably is"... When you dig a little deeper however, it often turns out to be not such a great deal after all, owing to restrictions and hidden charges, or because it is simply too cheap to…

May the 4th be with you...

Wednesday 1st May 2019

Something a little different this week, whilst staying with the theme of waste management, we acknowledge an important date in any Star Wars fan's calendar and delve into the famous rubbish shoot scene in the first ever film released - Episode 4, A New Hope. Picture the scene Cast your mind back and imagine that in an attempt to rescue the princess, Luke, Han and Chewie end up in a shootout with some Stormtroopers. Leia, taking control of the situation, fashions an escape through a garbage shoot filled with space sewage. Unfortunately, the garbage compressor turns on and the walls start caving in. Seconds from death, Luke manages to get through to his trusty droids, who come to the rescue. Interesting facts The…

Four misconceptions about waste management brokers!

Thursday 25th April 2019

In this week's blog series, we look at some common queries we hear about using a broker: Expensive - Why would I use a broker when I can go direct for less money? Whilst it might seem cheaper to make your own arrangements, we save you hassle and valuable time. We source and arrange a reliable and trustworthy contractor who will deliver an efficient service, and as a broker, we often get favourable rates. Site Solutions has a nationwide approved register of tried, tested and importantly trusted sub-contractors, who will deliver when and where required. Rubbish Fact No. 5

Wednesday 10th April 2019

Next in our 'Rubbish Facts' series we pay tribute to National Beer Day! This year National Beer Day was acknowledged on Sunday 7th April, and while I for one enjoyed a cold one in this milder Spring weather, did you know 5 out of 6 glass bottles are thrown away!? The shocking truth In the UK alone, over 200 tonnes of glass bottles a year end up in landfill. A surprising and concerning truth, when just one recycled glass bottle saves enough energy to power a laptop for up to 30 minutes and the amount of glass recycled in a year provides the energy to launch 10 space shuttle missions! Alert- boring, but interesting part up next... A paper published last year, 'Circular Economy'…

Rubbish Fact No.4

Thursday 14th February 2019

You get what you pay for! Recently a customer of ours told me that they could get the skip we usually deliver for them at a ridiculously cheap rate from another company and that the other company didn't mind what the mix of waste in the skip was (e.g. plasterboard mixed in with general waste). There was no way we could compete with that price so, needless to say, they went with the other company. Whenever we are offered a really cheap rate from a waste sub-contractor we query it. Waste costs money to handle, sort and dispose of in an environmentally responsible and compliant way. If someone is offering a really cheap deal on waste, you need to…

Rubbish Fact No.3

Friday 21st December 2018

The issues with wrapping paper Wrapping paper is designed for single use only, and although some of us try to re-use it (my mum always had a big bag of used wrapping paper in the cupboard), realistically this can only be done once or twice before it is finally binned. Recycling wrapping paper is problematic in a number of ways. Fibres found in cheaper types of paper are not strong enough to recycle. Wrapping paper is often dyed and laminated and can also contain non-paper additives such as gold and silver colouring, glitter and plastics. And to compound all this, it often has sticky tape still attached to it. Landfill or incineration are all too often the…

Rubbish Fact No.1

Tuesday 16th October 2018
Tom Jarratt

The truth about waste Construction, demolition and excavation (the markets we deal with most often) account for around 60% of the generation of total waste in the UK. That is around 100 million tonnes per year or enough to fill Lake Windermere, Britain's deepest, largest lake, in just eight months! How Site Solutions can help That's a lot of waste and we want to be right there organising the environmentally responsible, efficient and compliant disposal of that waste. A lot of people don't understand the benefits of using a broker to procure their waste disposal requirements. Here is a list of reasons why it makes sense... 1. It saves management time - instead of your site team or procurement team ordering…
