Are you dreaming of a White Christmas?

Global warming is a massive topic, and this month's blog is only going to scratch the surface. In the words of Bing Crosby 'I'm dreaming of a white Christmas, just like the ones I used to know', unfortunately ring true and are a stark reminder that global warming is having real consequences by removing a lot of things that were once loved.

Snowy and sub-zero temperatures could soon become the thing of the past, according to BBC news; ' the 2040's most of southern England could no longer see sub-zero days. By the 2060's only high ground and northern Scotland are likely to experience such cold days. The projections are based on global emissions accelerating.' These facts could spell the demise of the white Christmas fantasy, waking up to snow fall and sledging after a big turkey dinner. Warmer temperatures unfortunately mean higher odds.

The last white Christmas was recorded 10 ten years ago in 2010 over much of the UK. Can we dream of a white Christmas this year? Research suggests this year's odds for snow across the Midlands is 5-1; lets' not write it off just yet!

Why does Snow make Christmas more 'Christmassy'

Back in the 1600's, Winters were severe with temperatures often dropping to -13 degrees. This was a regular occurrence for over 200 years. It was this, together with stories in popular culture such as " A Christmas Carol " by , Charles Dickens, in which snow featured heavily, that made it a firm symbol of Christmas.

Fun Fact: During a harsh winter in 1536, King Henry VIII travelled along the frozen River Thames from London to Greenwich on a sleigh!
