Skips are known to have more than one name in the trade so its difficult to keep track of what name skip is what size. We've tried to keep things simple and noted the common nick names used along with sizes.
An 'everyday' skip for domestic use or small amounts of light waste would be known as a Mini or a Midi, sizes 2yd, 4yd and 6yd available. A popular skip type for building contractors undertaking domestic or small business projects.
Next size up a Maxi or a Builders skip as known in the trade, available in 6 yd and 8 yd skips. Often used for medium sized projects such as home clearances and domestic or small business refurbishments. On average a skip of these size can hold between 50-80 black bags of waste.
Larger skips, available in 12 yd, 14 yd and 16yd skips. Typically, larger skips have high sides making it ideal for light and bulky waste loads. Skips in these sizes are used for major constructions works such as large office clearances or large renovations. A 12 yd skip can hold on average 80-110 black bags, a 14yd skip around 145 black bags and a 16 yd skip around 175 black bags.
Roll on roll off skips are much larger skips (often referred to as RoRo's) for much larger projects. Some waste contractors will carry smaller RoRo's with sizes varying from 15-20yd which are suitable for large amounts of heavy waste. Larger RoRo's, between 20 and 40 yd capacity, are also available for large amounts of light waste. The roll on roll off is a step up from a traditional skip and used mainly in the construction industry, for example: demolition projects, manufacturing waste and construction projects.
A roll on roll off skip is ideal for projects that will require the disposal of huge amounts of waste cutting down on overall waste management costs. A 15-20yd roll on roll off skip can typically hold around 220 black bin bags, whilst a 40 yd will hold 440 black bin bags.
An enclosed skip is available for the safe storage and disposal of larger volumes of waste. Waste includes general or recycling materials, heavy and bulky materials, inert materials and dry wastes. Enclosed skips are ideal for hazardous wastes, or in areas where security is an issue, whilst protecting its contents from the elements. Fastenings are available for the option to lock if necessary
